Monday, August 18, 6-7pm

Join us for an hour-long group session, during which you’ll respond to prompts to create new material and ideas for your own writing. The exercises are designed for nonfiction writers and poets, but fiction writers are more than welcome to join.
A Joy to Behold: A Generative Memoir Workshop
Instructor: Jennifer McGaha
In this joyful, generative memoir writing workshop, we will begin each session by reading a bit about what other writers have to say about the radical practice of cultivating joy in our lives and on the page. Then we will move into guided writing activities followed by a time to share and discuss each other’s work. Whether you want to begin a new project, enhance existing material, or simply immerse yourself in the company of other joy-seeking writers, you will leave this workshop with new material and fresh ideas for expanding and developing your work.
September 6, 2-4pm + September 13, 2-4pm
Let the Good Times Roll: Widening the Pond of our Daily Influence
Instructor: Mamie Morgan
After devoting two decades to creative writing instruction, I've learned that the nuts and bolts of teaching someone how to write aren't that difficult. You read a ton. You write when you can. You discuss these practices with others who've been reading a ton, writing when they can. What seems more flummoxing (for reasons we'll discuss) is the attraction of influence: how and where we receive the world's details, along with how those details govern and alter the work we've set out to write. Reception and subsequent play between our individual psychic perspectives and the wellspring of what surrounds us--for me, anyway--is where the good times dwell.
This two-day course is for all levels of writers exploring any genre. We'll generate new work and dive more rootedly into how we gather material, hopefully widening the rivers of substance we utilize while lessening our own availability to artistic stuckness.
October 4th & 5th
Saturday: 9am-noon
Sunday: 1-3pm
Writing a Query Letter
Instructors: Lindsey DeLoach Jones & Ashley Warlick
Looking for a literary agent? If you have any interest in traditional publishing, you need a query letter—the ultimate sales pitch for your book project.
You can write a query letter even if your book isn’t yet written. Before you can get started, you need to know the premise of your book and how your idea fits into the publishing marketplace. Then you need to write a concise letter selling that idea to the industry gatekeepers. This class will walk you through the essential components of a query letter, and you can get personalized feedback from agented writers.
Saturday, October 18th, 2-3:30pm
Craft Book Club
Facilitated by Beth Ables, Ashley Warlick, and Lindsey DeLoach Jones
For our first-ever craft book club, we’ll read 3 books about the writing craft and industry, and we’ll meet once to discuss each book (3 times total). The price of your books is included in the cost of the book club.
September 8, October 6, and November 10 / 6:30-8pm
September 8: Beth leads a discussion about THE BOOK OF ALCHEMY by Suleika Jaouad
In The Book of Alchemy, Suleika explores the art of journaling and shares everything she’s learned about how this life-altering practice can help us tap into that mystical trait that exists in every human: creativity. She has gathered wisdom from one hundred writers, artists, and thinkers in the form of essays and writing prompts. Their insights invite us to inhabit a more inspired life.
October 6: Ashley leads a discussion about the classic ON WRITING by Stephen King
Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it—fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told.
November 10: Lindsey leads a discussion about BEFORE AND AFTER THE BOOK DEAL by Courtney Maum
There are countless books on the market about how to write better but very few books on how to break into the marketplace with your first book. Cutting through the noise (and very mixed advice) online, while both dispelling rumors and remaining positive, Courtney Maum's Before and After the Book Deal is a one–of–a–kind resource that can help you get your book published.
